BPH (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia)
Many large scale studies, including long term studies, show that HoLEP reduces morbidity compared to TURP and is a highly effective procedure. Tissue is still removed for histology but the holmium laser reduces bleeding and the requirement for irrigation. Hospital stays are shorter with reduced catheterisation time and nursing time. This is a cost effective procedure with no expensive consumables.
STONES
Utilising the high power controlled laser energy allows all urologists to fragment even the hardest stones in a single treatment. The improved fragmentation means that the tiny residual fragments are easily passed reducing re-treatment and the need for stents.
TUMOURS
Small superficial bladder carcinomas can be destroyed with laser energy passed down a flexible cystoscope with local anaesthesia. Larger tumours can be resected as a catheter free day case procedure.
